Getting started

Install Wrist Recorder on your iPhone. The Apple Watch app installs with it; if it doesn't, open the Watch app on your iPhone and install Wrist Recorder under Available Apps.

  1. Record. On Apple Watch, open Wrist Recorder and tap New Recording. On iPhone, tap the microphone button. Allow microphone access the first time.
  2. Stop. Tap the stop button. The note is saved, and notes from your watch are sent to your iPhone.
  3. Read. Your iPhone transcribes each note automatically. Allow Speech Recognition the first time. The list shows the first line; tap a note to read, copy, or share it all.
  4. Add the complications to your watch face so recording is one tap away (see below).

How do I add Wrist Recorder to my watch face?
  1. Touch and hold your watch face, then tap Edit.
  2. Swipe to Complications and tap a slot.
  3. Choose Wrist Recorder, then New Recording or Add to Latest Note.
  4. Press the Digital Crown to save.

You can also do this on your iPhone in the Watch app, under My Faces. New Recording opens the app and starts recording a new note. Add to Latest Note records more onto your most recent note, or starts a new one if you don't have any.

A note I recorded on my watch isn't on my iPhone yet

Notes are sent in the background, so they can take a few minutes, and longer for long notes. To speed things up:

  • Keep your watch near your iPhone, with Bluetooth on or both on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Open Wrist Recorder on your iPhone.

A note appears on your iPhone once all of its audio has arrived. If you record while your iPhone is out of range, the note is sent when you're back together.

A note says "Waiting to transcribe"

Your iPhone transcribes notes one at a time, newest first, while Wrist Recorder is open. Open a note to move it to the front of the line. Notes that arrive while the app is closed are transcribed the next time you open it.

Transcription isn't working
  • "Turn on Speech Recognition for Wrist Recorder in Settings": open Settings > Privacy & Security > Speech Recognition and turn on Wrist Recorder.
  • "Speech recognition isn't available right now": check your internet connection. Wrist Recorder tries again when you come back to the app.
  • "No speech was recognized": the recording was too quiet or unclear. Try speaking closer to the microphone.

When your iPhone supports it, transcription happens on the device and works offline. Otherwise it uses Apple's speech recognition over the internet.

Recording doesn't start

Wrist Recorder needs microphone access. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on Wrist Recorder. On Apple Watch, open the Settings app on the watch, then Privacy & Security > Microphone.

How do I add more to a note?

On Apple Watch, open the note and tap +, or use the Add to Latest Note complication. The new recording is added to the end, and your iPhone transcribes the whole note again.

How do I delete notes, on one device or both?

Swipe left on a note in the list, or open a note on Apple Watch and tap the trash button. On iPhone, tap Select, choose several notes, and tap the trash button to delete them together.

By default, deleting a note on one device deletes it on the other. To keep each device's notes separate, open Wrist Recorder on your iPhone, tap the gear button, and turn off Sync Deletions.

Can I get my iPhone recordings on my watch?

Yes. On your iPhone, tap the gear button and turn on Copy iPhone Recordings to Watch. Notes you've already recorded on iPhone are copied too.

How do I share notes?

Open a note, tap the share button, and choose Share Transcript or Share Audio. Audio is sent as one sound file per note, including anything you added to it later. You can also copy just part of a transcript by selecting the text. To share several at once, tap Select in the list, choose the notes, and tap the share button.

How do I find a note?

Pull down on the list to show the search field, and type a word or phrase you said, or part of a note's name. The list shows only the notes that match, and opening one highlights the matches in its transcript and scrolls to the first. Notes that haven't been transcribed yet are found only by name.

Can I rename a note?

Yes. On your iPhone, swipe left on the note in the list and tap Rename, or open the note, press and hold its title, and tap Rename. The new name shows on your Apple Watch too. To go back to showing the date, rename it and leave the name blank.

How do categories work?

While recording, on iPhone or Apple Watch, tap the category under the stop button to choose one. New notes start as Uncategorized. To change a note's category later, open it and tap its category. On iPhone, tap the filter button next to Settings and uncheck any categories you don't want to see, or use Select All and Deselect All. The list remembers your choice, and a bar at the bottom says which categories it's hiding; tap Show All there to see everything again. To add, rename, recolor, reorder, or delete categories, tap the gear button, then Categories; changes reach your watch automatically. Notes in a deleted category become Uncategorized. A deleted starting category is listed under Suggestions, to add back with one tap.

Can I edit a transcript?

Not in Wrist Recorder. You can select and copy any part of a transcript, or share it to another app to edit it there.

Where are my notes stored? Are they backed up?

Notes stay on your iPhone and Apple Watch; nothing is uploaded to us. Notes on your iPhone are included in your iPhone's backups, like other app data. See the privacy policy for details.

What do I need to use Wrist Recorder?

An iPhone with iOS 17 or later. The Apple Watch app needs watchOS 10 or later, on a watch paired with that iPhone.
